 Indigo Bunting (Buteo lineatus)

Description: The male Indigo Bunting is blue all throughout.  It will also have black markings around the eyes and may occasionally have brown on the wings or breast.  The upper bill is black while the lower half has more tones of gray and blue.  Females on the other hand are completely brown with no distinguishing streaks or marks, although they may have some blue tinged feathers.

Habitat: The Indigo Bunting has been known to reside in brushy and weedy areas along edges of cultivated land, woods, roads, power line rights-of-way, and in open deciduous woods and old fields.

Diet: The Indigo bunting enjoys plant material such as seeds, buds, and berries, but will also consume small insects and spiders.

Behaviors:
  • Glean insects off branches
  • Indigo Bunting are known to feed in flocks during the winter
  • They make nests almost always close to or around shrubs 

Miscellaneous:                                                     
  • The sequences of notes in Indigo Bunting songs are unique to local neighborhoods.
